Deadstick line

Recommended Posts

Just got a Thorne Bros. deadstick for x-mas that I'm planning on using for walleye. I fish alot on Little bay de noc in Michigan's U.P. where they grow em big and it's not uncommon to tangle with 5-10lber's, so I'm wondering what you guys think would be the proper line for this rod. I usually fish any where from 10ft to 40ft of water so I'm concerned about line stretch when fishing deeper. Any thoughts?

If you are fishing in a portable or in weather where you do not have to worry about your line freezing up on the spool, I would spool up with either PowerPro or FireLine in 10# test (around 3# dia.). I like the green color, but others like the yellow because it is easier to see. Tie on a small swivel and add a 3 foot leader of 8# or 10# Berkly Vanish to tie your plain hook or jig to.

If you fish a lot under conditions that would allow the braided line to freeze to the spool, I would spool up with straight Vanish in the pound test you like best. This line is very strong! I have been using 4# test Vanish all winter and have had no problem handeling up to 5# walleyes. Just make sure your reel has a good, smoothly working drag for either line! The drag should be set fairly light with the braids to keep the hooks from ripping out of the fish because of their "no stretch" quality.

Good Fishing!

I use power pro on all of my Thorne Bros dead sticks. Nice and effective I caught one of those whopper on the Red River part 2 video it went 9 lbs 5 oz and I had no problem with my Thorne's Deadstick I have also caught several 5 lbers on it as well. You wouldn't think the rod could do it but it does and without any problems. I don't think it is important though to use a low strecth line and power pro fits that bill.
