Beginning flyfishing

Question

I know many of the expert fly guys out there will probably cringe at the idea of another rookie out there, but I am committed to learning to flyfish this summer. Any advice on purchasing a set up? I want to be able to fish both for stream trout and occassionally for bass, because I've heard that it's a blast. Any advice would be appreciated. What stores in the Twin Cities would you recommend?

The main two shops that I deal with are the Fly Angler (Fridley) and Bentley's Outfitters(Eden Prairie). Both have good selections and great sales people. Just tell them what you want to fish for and they will help.

Fly Angler in Fridley is excellent for learning to fly fish. It's located at Thorne Brothers off of University. They do lessons for $25 a session. Call them and they'll set something up.

Summit Fly Fishing on Grand Ave. in St. Paul is a nice shop. They offer on the stream classes & other workshops for new fly fishers. It's a smaller shop with a nice personal touch. Paul Mueller is the owner and he's a real good guy. He'll be more than happy to talk fly fishing with you.

Don't practice around trees or someone you care about or anywhere near where someone can see you. I love fly fishing and once you get your wrist and arm action working the answer to life, universe and everything soon follows. Wait til you catch your first bass or northern on a fly rig!!
