I don't really know anybody that uses the lanterns anymore, granted I see plenty of them, but the general consensous seems to be the LED rope lights. Last year I purchased the rope light from Clam Corp and got raped for it, like 30 bucks or so, and the light output isn't really all that great. I know Gander has their version on sale for 7.99 right now but finding them is next to impossible.

One other thing I picked up last week was a really good deal and works incredibly well. Go to your local sporting goods store and check out the LED headlamps, I got one from Energizer, has 2 white spot, 2 white flood, and 2 red "night vision" LEDs on it. The whites can be used seperate or together and they last a long time, about 50 hours on 3 AAA batteries. I didn't have time to rig the rope light in the house this fall and used only the headlamp to light the Trap Guide the other night and it put off enough to see holes in the far corners and still be able to tie up a new jig. And they work wonders for packing up and going home. Anyway, just thought I would let people know about them.
