Hunting Land Questions

I'm always curious to talk w/ other hunters that hunt northern half of Minnesota--(in the WOODS)--- We have land near Pine River and typically see deer but personally haven't come face to face w/ that "nice" buck-- curious how many deer everyone sees in a day or weekend in their respective spots and if they feel it's b/c of the population, how they've managed it, or what.. I know there is luck involved.. But, we are considering buying more land and I'm just curious to see what people report from different parts of the North woods.. so, if anyone has any insight, I'd be interested to talk about this some.. it may help us decide if we should stay in the area we are or head a different direction further north, or NW or NE I suppose--and what the different markets are holding for Acreage right now... Also-- we have 40 acres w/ some state/County land adjacent, but feel like we need more room-- Is there a typical "rule of thumb" as far as Hunter/per acre or anything that works for them.. we are thinking minimum of 80 on up-- w/ some State/County next to it would probably work best--- but, our group is growing and currently we are trying to hunt about 8 guys on our 40 and the adjacent land-- just want to be safe and get the best possible hunt in, as well as prepare for future growth....

I grew up just north of Pine River and I think the key to finding decent bucks in that area is to hunt wooded areas near farm fields. Where I hunted, there wasn't a corn field for a couple miles and that hurt us compared to my friends who had fields near them. They saw more and bigger bucks.

The other factor is finding an area where the hunters aren't picking off all the young bucks during the season or out of the season. Not easy to find around PR.

Good luck.

My place is in the Longville, Remer area and the deer are plentiful in my area. Does can be seen around the edges of pastures in the early evenings all the time now. Last Friday night I was driving down a gravel road with a neighbor heading to the local roadhouse and we were startled to see a ten pointer standing in the ditch eating.

Last fall some buck scraped the hell out of a small tree about ten feet off the end of my deck up there. I need to get one of those motion cameras and put it in the backyard...

Jeff, I think you better be looking for more land. If you are trying to cultivate a nice deer hunting camp, you should plan to incorporate a few food plots, occasional logging, not to mention a place to call home, be it cabin or camper. It all takes space. With a growing group of hunters, look for more than you think you will need. Adjacent public land is a good option, but remember that is a two way street, it brings people to your doorstep. Land values continue to soar around here, but there are still some gems out there. Good luck. I can recommend a good banker!

We also have land near Pine River (actually closer to Backus) and I have found that there has never been a shortage of average size bucks in the area but I cant say that I have ever seen a real trophy.

I have seen more buck sign this year than ever befor. I have stands on three very active scrape lines and some of the scrapes are huge; my uncle (who does not hunt this land) keeps telling me that they are from a small buck who is attempting to compinsate grin.gif; we'll find out next weekend.

Yeah- I agree w/ what you guys are saying.. we do enjoy the area--- we've had a couple nice 8 and 10 pters.. so, it's not like we haven't had luck... but, b/c of the limited room, feels like you have to pretty much hit your stand or switch w/ one of the other guys.. would be nice to have some more options.. considering getting in to the Muzzleloader season some... I just love being in the woods!-- but the couple days each weekend don't really do it any justice either... I'm envious of the guys talkinga bout their 160 they have to hunt!!!!!
