potlatch land lease

Has anyone ever did this and what was your overall experience with it. I am considering it for 2006. Sick and tired of not having a bow hunting area to my self. Was thinking of like 40 t0 100 acres thing the price is well worth it and much more affordable than buying my own piece of land.

I did it on a 226 acre parcel that abutted my land for $1300 split amongst a group of 5. I think in my area it isn't worth it because there aren't a lot of trophy bucks around. Just not the right conditions for it. It jumped up to $1500 and we let it pass. A year later some new guys leased it and now it is no longer open to the public. It is a shame Potlatch is doing this but I understand it. Too much money for a year and you can't do anything with the land in my opinion. Maybe the smaller parcels wouldn't be bad for 1 or 2 guys to hunt.

We did this the first year the option was available. Big bang for the BUCK for us. The rules have changed now and adjacent landowners are given preference. A parcel surrounded by state land with Potlatch access is the ultimate scenario for you to have a chance without the land ownersip deal in your favor. I recommend getting in on any parcel you are interested in even if it is a forty. Their HSOforum tells you everything you need to know and we have found their representives very helpful as they want to get to know you. You do become a valued steward of THEIR land and they do have strict rules but as a steward, you do have exclusive use. It is a shame it has come to this specifically if you are aware of the great land grab going on up north. Again I must emphasise the landowner preference and do not hesitate to call their rep on the phone. They have learned much since this program started.

A buddy and I lease an 80 that is between our properties. I expect the price to go up next year, not sure if we'll keep the lease or not. Biggest issue for us was not having someone else get it and post to keep us out of there. We've had it for 2 years and not posted it. A 120 on the south side of my property got leased this year and is posted. If you don't have a spot to hunt it's a relatively inexpensive way to get one. If you're used to hunting on Potlatch land that was open, you might be screwed.
