Tree Stand Safety

I haven't been able to find it in the news, but I was told by a co-worker that a bowhunter in the Cities died this weekend due to a tree stand mishap. The person was reportedly wearing a safety belt (not a harness), which apparently choked him when he fell. Has anyone heard of this incident? My heart goes out to their family.

Please - everyone - be safe this year, buy and use a harness climbing and sitting in a tree stand! After hearing of too many incidents like this, I have bought and use a harness, and I can't think of how many close calls I had before I used one.

Get a harness with a climbing belt on it as well - and use it while you are climbing the tree and setting your stand and tree steps. With the belt, you are safe, and can use both hands to attach the stand or steps, it is not only safer, but easier.

No, I didn't hear about the incident. These kind of incidents could easily be prevented. I agree, every hunter that goes up onto a tree stand should always wear a tree safety harness. My first couple of years hunting I used to wear a single seat belt type around my chest area. I had to learned it the hard way. One time on my second year I fell and the belt choke the sh*t out of me. A couple of my ribs were bruised. It was worst than I had expected. After that I never used a belt that just go around my body anymore. I went and bought an ($40.00) hunters safety harness. I even tried to falled of a tree just see how the harness works and it works great. Everybody should buy and wear one when tree stand hunting. It all depends on how much your life is worth to you???
