aquafang
Has anyone ever had the problem of having their reel turn hard until the shack warms up? I have a reel like this and It must be the grease. Is there any certain grease a person can use that is not so affected by cold weather???Ty SMith
CrappieJohn
Remove all the factory grease from the reel by removing the side cover and then juice the internal workings up good with Hot Sauce....a quantum reel product. Do this well BEFORE the ice season and work the sauce into the reel. Bearings in these newer reels are sealed. The more bearings you have, the greater the chance the reel will tighten during the cold weather and we can't do a lot about this situation, but by juicing up the shaft and gears we can get rid of the biggest culprit to stiff working equipment- the grease. Bob_D
The problem is the most likely the greese in the main bearing (on a spinning reel it's located where the shaft for the spool comes through the reel). I had to remove the bearings out of a couple of my reels, clean all the grease out with alcohol, dry them and then lube them with TW-25 B grease. TW25B can be found in gun shops. It was first used by the military but it's now marketed by Kleen Bore. Great stuff and works in VERY low temps. Remember...If you don't remove the old grease that is causing the problem, adding new grease won't help. Note: the bearings in all of my reels are exposed. If you clean the grease out sealed bearing, you will need to replace it with an quality oil (NOT a penitrating oil like WD-40)
