Ashland warmwater discharge at powerplant

Recommended Posts

Hey, I am looking for ways to extend the fishing season and was wondering how fishing is at the Ashland warmwater discharge? Is this spot wadeable or do you need a boat or canoe? What different species come in? I was also wondering about water clariety, is it clear, dirty etc. I live in Superior Wi and was wondering if it is worth an exploring trip? Any answers would be greatly apprieciated. Thanx much Forrest

Tree,

Well I do not do much fishing around the "pipe" in the fall, as I find most species are out roaming in the bay still. But, I am sure there are some fish to be had in and around this area. As the water gets colder, there could be some 'eyes hanging around this pipe and you might even hook into a salmon as it nears ice up. I would opt for a smaller boat on a calmer day so you can be more mobile and maybe even get out into a little bit deeper water. Water clarity is starting to get better now... After all that rain we got, the bay got pretty dirty.

Depending on the species you are looking for, and are limited to wading, check out the areas near the Sioux and Onion rivers. A person can easily wade out near these stream mouths to cast spoons for coho, splake, and browns. Or head over to the Washburn Coal dock to cast for some of these same fish species.

Hope this helps and if you have anymore questions, ask away.

Thanx for the info. I like to flyfish at night casting streamers and big wooley buggers for walleyes in shallow sand or rock shorelines and was thinking this might be a good spot. Last fall tried the Onion one evening for cohos but no luck. Maybe will try Sunday night at both spots. Thank you again. Forrest

Went to school in Ashland, and my god is the "hot pond" packed out there at times. People catch fish there, but it always seemed like such a zoo to me. Keep that in mind.

Shoot.....revealed to Jim that I went to Northland. Sure he'll never view me the same again. grin.gif
