KidWalleye
I've always been a clam guy, but after watching the Wildside of fishing show I see they use the otter. I looked them up on the web and they look SWEET. Has anyone seen them in person. The one I'm looking at is the small cottage. The web page says "new" so I assume that is new this year. I have been looking at the Trap Pro. I like those too. Just looking for opinions. Thanks Kid
Ray Esboldt
I used the Otter Small Den last year and was very pleased with it. However, if were to do it over, I would go with the Small Cottage. The Cottage simply has more room for gear. I am able to get everything into the Den, but it is a squeeze. I was a Fish Trap owner for years, literally. I used the same house from 1990 to 2003 (ask Dietz and Matt about that bad boy). However, after abusing an Otter for a year, I am pleased I made the change. Traps are great houses, Otters are even better. First, they have what seems to be indestructable tubs. I would say they're good for 100 miles on a gravel road, more with the Hy-Fax runners. Second, the fabric is heavy duty. With some moderate caution, it will hold up for many years. Third, the square tubing slides and locks into place effortlessly. They are a little more expensive, but in my opinion, are worth the few extra dollars. With that said, I wouldn't fault anyone for buying a Trap, Frabill, or a couple of the other well constructed brands. You may also want to look at the Otter Wilderness Series of houses. They are a little more price friendly.
Matt Johnson
I have an Otter Small Cottage and it's everything that I've been looking for in a 1-man portable fish house. I used to fish out of the Fish Trap Pro, which is also a good 1-man fish house, but after using the Otter Small Cottage I’ve definitely found a new 1-man to call home. It's very roomy and it fishes extremely well. I have plenty of space for all my gear, both in the sled and on the ice, yet it’s not overly big and gaudy. The sled is very durable, as is the frame, canvas and zipper. It’s made to withstand some abuse and tough conditions. It has a front zipper door that provides easy entering and exiting when the time calls for it.Last year was the first year the Small Cottage was on the market, and I’ve heard nothing but good things from people who own one. I used the Small Cottage all last winter, and I’m very happy with my choice. It will be in my starting line-up again this winter as well…Good Fishin,Matt Johnson
KidWalleye
Thanks for the replys. How much can I expect to pay? Are the tub and the shelter sold separately? I usually go to the Ice show so I will be buying one there. I think I can get the best price there.
Ray Esboldt
For a price (actually a pretty darn good one right now), look at Thorne Brother's web site. From past experience, they've always delivered the best or close to the best price on big ticket items. Plus, if something is messed up with the outfit you purchased, they will get it right. Dave
If you're looking at the Otter Cottage, ask about the ultra-wide sled, instead of the standard width sled. It holds more gear.
Matt Johnson
Yep, I'd definitely go with the Ultra-wide sled if you get the Small Cottage. A lot of extra room, yet you don't jeopardize weight.Good Fishin,Matt Johnson

jig n' jerk
I was wondering if anyone has seen the new wilderness series ice houses in person. I heard they are the same design just a little lighter weight fabric and sled material. I don't tow mine behind a sled so the sled durability is not a critical issue. So my question is do I go wilderness or stick with their original series. also, what is the difference in price between the wilderness Pike or a comparable original otter? Dave
Have seen them many times. I'm not sure if you can purchase individual components but I believe the Wilderness series comes as a package; sled, shelter, seats and cover. So, take that into consideration when you're comparing prices. You can compare pricing at Otter Outdoors
