Rules Question

Recommended Posts

I was just reading the rules for rifle deer hunting to see if there was any changes from last year. We are allowed to get a regular license which lets us shoot one deer of any sex in all of zone 1. Then we can get an extra permit for half of the price of the regular license of a specific zone. The part that I don't understand is that last year this was a antlerless permit only and this year it wasn't clear to me what you could tag with the permit. Any onw know the answer to this?

Thanks!!

Reef Runner,

With you zone 1 license, you can take a deer of either-sex in any managed or intensive area (red or green on the map). In lottery areas (blue), you can only take a buck. For additional, antlerless permits you can use 1 in a managed area or up to 4 in the intensive areas. They are called bonus permits and are available for $14 each. They are not area specific, you're just limited by the bag limit. I hope that answers your question.

Icornice hit it on the head. My section (175) is bucks-only this year, unless you sent in for an anterless back in September. I did and got my doe permit in the mail last week. My brother and dad forgot to get their license in time, so they'll be hunting for bucks only. Check the map because there are a few sections in zone 1 that are in the lottery (bucks only).

The management and intensive harvest sections are just like last year. The half-price license is for an anterless deer.

I better hit it on the head! The best thing you can do is check your local outdoor store around the first week in August. That's when the regs book comes out. Those permit areas in the north and northeast winter kill so they'll go from lottery to managed, depending on the weather.

Good luck this year.
