a little tip i learned about getting permission from farmers

Recommended Posts

with the pheasant season rapidly aproaching, i decided while home this weekend doing some duck hunting that i would just double check with some land owners i know about when/when not to hunt on some of their lands. it still amazes me how many instances there still is of people not getting proper permission to access a property. many of the farmers i talk with always tell me i can hunt their lands for pheasants....some always have restrictions like "except for thanksgiving" or "after slug season is over" stuff like that, which im happy to oblige with. and a lot of the the land owners i talk with also thank me for getting ahold of them before the season, especially the farmers who are busy with harvest. so i guess what im saying is if you know where you want to hunt it wouldnt hurt to ask as far ahead of time as you can...people seem to appreciate the advanced planning. and it might prevent a guy from beating you to a spot that looked promising. and remember the please and thankyous! good luck to all this upcoming opener. it should be one of the best seasons ever.

You are 100% correct. While some farmers don't mind being stopped and asked while harvesting, most appreciate the consideration and courtesy of your asking well in advance of that. Even if you are turned down, you've left that farmer with a positive impression of hunters in general, as long as you aren't lusting after his daughter anyway... wink.gif

Another great post, I also would like to add that it pays to go in August or very early September as most farmers are just starting to gear up to harvest thier crops and are almost always close to home.

We went to South Dakota in mid August, we found a lot of the farmers were at home working on equipment or moving equipment around to better access them.

Many we happy to chat with us, not so many were open to us hunting though.Mostly do to other familly members or guides had the first dibbs.
