Old steel Rod

Gess were to fish

Question

I have my Great grandfathers ultralight rod and the paint is peeling and chipped. I would like to repaint this rod but I am unsure on what I should use for paint. The cork handle is in Great shape and is a fun rod to use. I would just like to look a little better. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have an old steel rod from my great grandpa also. It is a 3 pc "traveler" that is only about 3 1/2' long when put togother.

Anyway, I don't fish with it. I would hate to have a mishap with it going overboard. Mine could also use a coat of paint, but I think that by painting it, the character would be lost. That said, if you want to paint it I would mask off the guides and the cork VERY carefully and use a good enamal paint. If you have a airbrush light coats would be key. If you are spraying from a can, well???

If it were me, I would leave it as is.

You may someday appreciate it more in it's worn state. A testimony to the many years ago, many days use, and fond memories of your grandfather or great grandfather. To me, a worn piece of fishing or hunting equipment is a great feeling. Just think of those poor souls that have old hunting and fishing stuff that still looks like brand new for lack of use.

Besides nostalgic value, the actual value would also be seriously affected with an aftermarket coat of paint.

Just a thought.

I have an old steel square stock rod.It even has ceramic inserts in the guides. It hangs in my den with an old "Creek Chub" hanging from the old braided dacron line.Thats where she will stay.I do admitt it would be fun to hang a fish from it one day.

My Grandfather gave me his old steel rod/reel combo, even had a heavy vinyl case with a steel rod in it to protect the fishing rod. turns out its a Hurd Super Caster, made in the 1940's and it cost $45 back then! and worth $150-200 now.
I may try to catch a fish with it for the sake of feeling what gramps did sometime, but Id rather see it passed on to my kids.

Most of you guys have the right Idea about just leaving it alone. But Grandpa and dad both have had to put new eyes on it. So I thought this would be my little contribution to it before I pass it on to my Kids. But I think I might have to ponder over it sitting on the dock...
I am not sure how old it is or how much it went for but its a old Winchester. It has the patent date of May 4,1920. I would like to see what its worth now. Any ideas were to look.
