Question

I am looking at replacing an old outboard with a new 50hp mercury 2 stroke. This will be on a older alumacraft backtroller. How will this motor perform? Will this be to much motor, boat is rated for 50hp.Do these motors troll slow? Any comments will be helpful. Thanks

Hi Pete I also fish out of a older backtroller 1986 17.5 ft, mine is rated for a 50 and thats what i have on mine 50 merc, same year as the boat. 50 wont be to big and should troll down fine nomatter what kind you buy. I would advise getting a power tilt and trim though mine doesnt have it and it is kind of a pain sometimes not having it.good luck

Hi pete,
Thats the motor I run but mine is a 2000 model. So far so good. I had to replace an oil pump in it this spring because a seal was installed wrong, fluke.. The thing will push my 16 ft smokercraft (see my webpage) if the waves are right and the boats loaded right at 32 mph. Load it down and im consistently a 28 mph guy, which is plenty fast for my lakes. I use it alot for backtrolling, it's smooth as a 3 cylinder can be, a few people have asked if it was a 4 stroke. Overall if I had to buy another I wouldnt hesitate, its a good motor. A hard hard day for me I'll burn 14 gallons of gas. I also like the weight and cost thing vs the 4 stroke. Both fall in favor of the two stroker. Your backtroller might be a bit lighter than my smokercraft so keep that in mind also..Try it, let us know what you think! Paul
