Best Semi-Auto shotgun on the market?

fishing4fun

Question

I'm going to start looking for a new semi auto shotgun. I'm an 870 guy. I've had mine since I was 12 (31 now) and now I would like to try a semi auto. I like the feel of the Berretas, but am not opposed to getting anything else. I'd like to here some critiques on all the shotguns. What is everyones oppinions. Good or Bad.

Thanks

Kodiak,

I shoot a Beretta, no Remington tanks for this guy. I shoot a fair amount of trap and seriously, I could take you and a few others out to lunch. Some are great, but many SBEs struggle with trap loads.

My Beretta went over 10,000 rounds without a jam this year. I know it is going to happen sometime, but ... I hope it doesnt happen on a rooster! My new goal is 15,000 rounds.

we will take that beretta out with the sbe's and go run some flooded timber and get the guns dunked and see who jams first shooting 3.5"'s, the sbe is a "hunting" gun built for a man who use's it as a tool and not for fun, they are made to be abused and take it and come back for more. LOL j/kidding around guy!

All I shoot is my 390, for deer, ducks, geese, pheasants, sharpies, huns, and ruffies. Pheasant hunting in the Dakotas can be pretty tough on autos, but I havent had a problem yet. I really should get better about cleaning it, as I only break it down once per year and give it a good cleaning (right before deer hunting). I shoot in a trap league, that is the only easy stuff my gun sees. Dont get me wrong, SBEs are good guns, but I am just not a big fan of them. They are, however, better than everything that doesnt say Beretta. My buddy just bought a new Benelli and it jammed 5 out of the first 12 shots. He went through it and it seems to be better now.

Actually, you remind me of a funny story. We are talking guns with a guy I didnt know and of course he was an 1187 fanatic. He said his 1187 would last longer than my Beretta any day and to prove it we should go out to the trap field. I gave him a bewildered look and said, if you even think it is possible that your gun could jam in one day at the trap course, you lose.

SBE's and Extrema, yes, at least $1250. You can find the 3" Benelli's for $900, and Beretta 391's for $750. Take a look, you can find either in used models for much less.

I personally shoot a Sporting 390, and have nothing but good to say about it. Shoots everything I put into it, has the wide rib I prefer(former Winchester SX1) groupie, and the wood is real purty. Traded the silver sided receiver for a plain old blued one though - too much for the duck blind!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
