NON-RESIDENT loking for INFO

Recommended Posts

Hi im a non resident thinking about coming out there hunting in NOV.and was just wandering if you have to bring a boat or can you get by with a good pair of chest waders and hunt the pot holes. The other thing I was thinking about was trying to field hunt but Ive heard rumors that its hard to get on any fields do to guides. My cousin goes by DLake every year but he mainly hunts Dlake thats why I was questioning about the potholes in or around that area.THANKS FOR THE INFO

In November the only open water may be DL,then a boat is a must. The fields also are hard to hunt once the pothole freeze over. I have gone the last week of October for a few years and once it froze over on us and the birds left.

We also hunt the last week of Oct. It's about 50/50 if the smaller potholes will be froze. There are a few bigger lakes where we hunt so we either shoot puddle ducks or we shoot divers. I guess that I would bring a boat with you and that way you are safe.

I would agree that most of the potholes and sloughs around by then are usually froze over especially in the northern part of the state. Devil's Lake won't be froze over until mid December but some of the bays may start to freeze by mid to late Nov.

November will find most of the smaller potholes froze over. If there is bigger water around and it doesn't have to be the size of DL there will be ducks. That's when the field hunting comes in to play.

Spend some time looking for ducks going in to the fields and then get permission and setup the next day if its late the day you spot them. If its earlier you may still have time to setup and get some afternoon shooting.

Field hunting can ge great in Nov if you find the birds.

I would suggest going after snow geese during that time. I usually hunt near the Clark Slayer national wildlife refuge and limit out on ducks that land in the goose spread. It's a fun time of the season to hunt but I wouldn't spend the time trying to pack all the gear/and a boat for open water, stick to the fields and have a blast.
