Kicker motor handle extensions?

Random guy

Recommended Posts

I am getting ready for some fall musky trolling and I have to use a differant kicker motor since mine was stolen. The problem is that I have a large rear casting deck on my boat and the current kicker will not have steering/shift hook-ups until spring when I have time to install the controls and I may trade the boat soon. Temporary is the way to go for now. Where can I get a extension handle and what can I do about the shift handle? I would like to be able to control the kicker from the drivers seat so I can be close to my electronics. Any ideas?

Places like Gander Mtn and Cabelas carry extension handles for elec trolling motors that can also be used with kicker motors. I bought one last spring for about $35, but am disappointed with it. From the catalog description, it has a "knuckle joint to enable convenient push-and-pulling steering, and also includes a lockout sleeve for converting to straight handle". I found it difficult to use with the joint, and the lockout sleeve is too flimsy and won't stay in place.

There are also devices that link the kicker to the main outboard so the steering wheel turns both at the same time. A mechanical tie-rod is about $26, and a hydraulic connector is about $21. I don't have any experience with eithr of these. I have also not seen anything that handles the gear shift for the kicker.

I bought one from Hannay's Marine this spring and it works great. Make sure to get the one with the "U Joint" as it makes working the throttle & steering much easier. I think it was about $50.

Go to wallmart or something and buy a plastic bat. Cut off the barrel end and slide the whole bat over the motor arm. Just duck tape it down or use a hose clamp and walla, a less than $5 fix to your problem.

Either that or do like someone else stated eariler, just get a PVC pipe and cut it to the right length and clamp it on, or duck tape it for that matter.
