Shore site suggestions

Finally managed to catch some legal size bullheads though they haven't brought much success with them. Fished from the public dock at Harriet Island 'til about 2 AM, at the 494 bridge ramp till 1 AM with no luck and until 11:30 PM in the edddy at Hidden Falls with similar results over the weekend. These are the only places I have felt safe enough to fish from shore alone at night. Would appreciate suggestions for alternate sights where you have shorefished at night without bad things happening to you or your vehicle. Do not need secret spots or anything but would like to get to know the metro river a bit better. Thank you for your generosity!

I don't think you are doing anything wrong, the fishing has just been that slow on the metro stretch of river lately.

I've got to give props to Fisher Dave, a.k.a "That Guy". He has a pretty good handle on metro catfishing and even he has been struggling to land fish lately.

I'm sure 'your' spots will produce fish, just maybe at different times of year, different water levels, different current flow, different water temp, etc. I think you may get the picture here.

One thing that I've noticed lately, is the flats don't have a problem taking down a piece of cutbait (cut sucker, etc.). Might be worth a try. For me, it is very hard to switch to a chunk of cut when you know the flats want a lively bait, but after many, many outings of no activity on a live bait, you start to consider the cut. Another off the wall idea is to fish them during the daylight hours. A number of shore spots have produced some awesome cats during the later daylight hours.

Right now, I can think of only 1 metro spot that 'was' consistently producing flathead cats every night, but they didn't have any size to them. Otherwise, a few of our shorespots are putting out about 1 really nice cat per week right now, the trouble is being there on that 1 night.

"That Guy" will hook you up if your both interested.

From what I gather.. your not doing anything wrong. The areas you are fishing are tried and true spots.. but theres a whole lot of water, and you need to try to find the *spot on the spot*. Hanson was not lieing.. fish are tough to come by right now, but not impossible. You cant outrule cutbait right now.. why I do not know.. but it has been more consistant than live bait... although live bait will produce if you get it in front of them when they are agressively feeding.

Safety while fishing in the metro.. that is a touchy one. It is safe most everywhere most of the time. I would avoid going anywhere too far off the beaten path for obvious reasons.. there are some crazy, and foolish folks in this world.. its best not to welcome a problem. The best thing you can do is find someone to fish with.. that can be hard with work schedules clashing, fish not biting consistantly, and nights are cooling off... its kind of like asking your fishing partners to go out and freeze for a while and probably not catch much... and only get 2 solid hours of sleep before work.. sounds like fun to me.

I wont post any spots on the forum here anymore.. Flathead fishing is becoming increasingly popular and I dont really care to compete for my own spots with people I dont know... worse yet watch fish leave the water regularly on stringers.

I am out fishing cats probably 5 nights a week still... been taking a couple nights off to get some morning fishing in lately(it has been good). I am sure we can figure out some way to cross paths. I am guessing the fishing is going to get good within a week or so.. running late this year.

I agree. It's been real slow lately. Just keep trying...seasons coming to an end though. Those spots are usually pretty good. One more spot you might want to try is in Lilydale right below the railroad bridge.. a deep hole with shallow water at the end and a nice logjam at the top. Not many people fish it, although it hasn't produced much of anything this year it's usually a great spot for shore fishin'.
