Salmon

Riverratpete,

i have fished the north shore for the last four years or so, both fall and spring, and have had some success. From what i hear its not much compared to what it used to be but I had fun. I found that a good bet for salmon is a week before peak pink salmon run till a couple weeks afterwards. you should check out mndnr.com select fishing and scroll down to north shore fishing reports. It has a weekly post of how fisherman are doing all along the north shore. Let me know how ya did.

Later

I was out in the Bayfield area of northern cheeseland today and did pretty well. Landed to males and lost three hens. Saw lots of fish and will be back and forth over the next week or so. Saw some steelies and splake mixed in with the kings and cohos. Anyone else getting any fish in the creeks/rivers yet?

Hey Bill.

We actually did awesome. Only got 7 trout and one salmon to the boat but we lost another salmon and like ten other trout...most just beyond the net. One of the trout was about 17 lbs. I lost a steelie yesterday and watched another guy land a 24" fish. I also lost three big female kings and landed two males...27 and 30 inches. I was fishing that at the place you checked out but didn't fish. The one my buddy was checking out the day we were on the boat. Secret spot you know. Well stay in touch and let me know when you're coming up I can do my best for an accurate report. Take Care!

Been out to a small creek along the south shore a couple times so far this fall and have been able to hook up with good numbers of very fresh kings, a few coho, and a few browns. Even with the low water levels it seems there are a lot of fish to be found. I have even saw a couple large coasters chasing each other around. i have only spotted one steelhead however, any reports of steelies out of the brule with any consistancy yet ?

Quick, I've been out that way a bit in the past week with some excellent success. Where I was fishing there were steelies, kings, cohos, splake...everything. I haven't been back to the brule in about a week now and nothing great was happening then i'm gonna give it another few days atleast before I go. Maybe with this rain more fish will be showing up. I sent you an e-mail did you ever get it? Let's meet up and kick some fin.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
