Early Fall Lake Trout!!!

Well it's after Labor Day, and now we are on our way to start yet another fall season here in the northwoods. As some of us will start to replace our fishing tackle with our hunting gear, this change in seasons, will give some of us anglers the chance to catch and land some of the biggest fish of the year.

Yesterday, I had the chance to make it out on the water in search of some early fall Lake Trout. And what a day it was!! The weather was beautiful, the water was calm, and I seemed to be the only boat on the water. All of these factors and the fact that the fish wanted to bite, made for one of the best days I have had on the water this year.

For the Lake Trout in particular, the fall season brings upon a change for them also. The yearly spawn for these deep water loving fish is closing in. With diminishing daylight and the waters starting to cool, we will start to see more and more trout move towards their spawning grounds. So with this in mind, I set off and found a lot of fish relating to pods of bait fish in deeper water adjacent a familar spawning ground. The action was fast and furious for sometime then tapered off as the bait fish started to disperse. But in that short amount of time, I had a great start to our fall season.

Even though hunting seasons are starting, you will still find me out on the water from time to time... In search of some great fall fishing!!!

Jim, sounds like you had a good day. Nice weather and calm waters. Hopefully I can get some calm winds on a weekend before long. Hows the musky fishing going?

Yeah, a great day indeed!! We boated 7 fish from this spot and lost 3. Of the 7 in the boat, we didnt have a fish under 25". The highlight was when I had the boat in neutral fighting the biggest fish of the day and I was watching my dipsy lines fall straight to the bottom and had a fish just slam onto one of the dipsy spoons. So after the bite died there, we moved to another spot and picked up a few smaller fish... The lakers have really been going good around here.

For musky fishing, we had a good outing last week. But this week, I went out one day and only seen one fish. Was tough conditions though, but we did end up catching some nice bass and got on some really good panfish action. We will see what this coming week brings me. Still looking for a 50" this year. Have seen a few big fish, but no big girls have wanted to play as of yet. Lots of time left though..

We had intended on coming that way this weekend, but the plans fell apart. Looks like we'll be hitting the lake here instead. Its probably a good thing that your waters are over an hour for me to drive, or I'd never see dry land.
