4 to 5 Pin Trailering Wiring Upgrade?

CanoeCruiser

Question

Hi All-

I just retired the old Jeep for a 2003 Pathfinder, and of course I forgot to look at the wiring harness. The trailer I have now is a 5 pin, but the Pathfinder has a four pin harness. Anyone got any 'favorite' places to have the harness replaced, or is this a dealer-type activity?

I know that the fifth wire is for the trailer brake assist and don't want to go on any extended trips without that little bit of help on sudden stops...

I think many Auto parts stores have harnesses already made for many vehicles. I think brake wire should be installed from factory since it's part of the towing package, maybe your vehicle doesn't have it. Also the electric brake should have a control box inside cab so you can adjust intensity of power sent to trailer, otherwise if you give full power it might lockup the tires.

the fifth pin is acctually for the reverse light. It sends a signal to the brakes on the trailer to not lock up when backing up. SOOOO... you have to either find the reverse light wire and tap into it, (not as clean of an install), or find a harness that has all of the needed wires and install the T-type adapter to go out to the trailer.

One dealer that I was told to go to was Lano's toolbox on the Anoka-Ramsey boarder. It is right on Hwy-10 on the south side of the road just past the technical college.

hope this helps.
