Welcome Tyler!

Thanks for the welcoming Mike. I will let you know next time I am in your area. I have family (soon-to-be inlaws) in Arlington, SD. I imagine we will come visit a few times a year.

I grew up in South Dakota on Mina Lake (10 miles from Aberdeen). I had my own boat at 10 years old (which I still have and use) and spent every single summer day fishing. At 14yrs old things changed because I got mobile. I got a truck and started fishing all bodies of water around the Aberdeen area. I could slip my boat right in the back of my truck and bring it anywhere.

I was lucky enough growing up to regularly fish the Missouri River with my grandpa, who was also my fishing mentor. If fished the Mobridge area primarily, but I have been most everywhere from Pollock to Chamberlain. He was a traveling salesman and always brought his boat and myself when he traveled near a fishable body of water.

Around my high school years (Aberdeen Central), I expanded my geographic fishing orbit to include the famous NE South Dakota lakes (Waubay, Bitter, Roy, Enemy Swim, Pickerel, Blue Dog, etc). In ’98 this area flooded something terrible and opened a plethora of fishing hatcheries in that area. The walleye population exploded in that area and I had the opportunity to fish several of the public and private sloughs in that area.

College (Northern State) opened many doors in the fishing world for me. I was careful to schedule classes in such a way that I could fish most every day. I definitely took advantage of that.

Today, I am graduated from college and happily live in Rochester, MN. I am a software developer for IBM in Rochester. I am engaged to be married next fall. We just bought a house less than a block from Willow Creek Reservoir in SW Rochester.

It’s a bit different here in MN. Growing up, I was predominately a walleye fisherman. Back in SD, I targeted walleye 90% of the time. I chased the Jumbo perch on hard water. Spring and fall, I would entertain the pannies quite often as well. Bass were something you accidentally caught when fishing for walleye. Until last year, I probably only fished smallies about 5 times and never targeted the largies.

Now bass fishing is part of my weekly routine. I’m still refining my skills and have a long ways to go before I would term myself as anything above an amateur.

I have a vast network of family and friends back in SD that I will be enticing to join our FM community.

I will be back in Aberdeen this fall on several occasions. I will be hunting geese Sept 9th near Aberdeen, and Fishing a Carp tournament on Mina and Richmond on Sept 10-11. I will be back for the regular duck and goose opener as well. Also pheasant opener in Oct. Again on the 2nd weekend of Nov. And depending on the weather, I will try to make it back early-mid Dec to get one last duck/goose hunt in.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Feel free to email me anytime: [email protected]

Great to have another guy with some knowledge of NE S dakota...

One thing I'd like to know though is how you can hunt South Dakota on their duck opener and expect to go back out in December for another trip. LEGALLY that is. Sounds kind of fishy to me since you just stated you were a MN resident and SD doesn't allow nonresident to split their 10 waterfowl license. Just curious. confused.gif

That is a perfectly good question. The answer is college. I am a

recent college graduate.

This will be the last year of this bonus, so I am going to enjoy it. I

consulted a game warden with my situation both in MN and SD and I can

continue to enjoy this benefit through this season\year.

Starting next year I will have to start applying for the Waterfowl

license and you get put in a raffle of some sorts. At that point I

will get more serious about hunting waterfowl in MN.

College my friend. It’s a great thing. Here is a quote from the SD Hunting Manual

Quote:

*The following are entitled to resident licenses without the above requirements if they have resided in the state for 30 days immediately before buying or applying for a license:

U.S. Armed Forces personnel stationed in South Dakota.

Nonmilitary persons residing on restricted military reservations in South Dakota.

Employees of the U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs or VA hospital or patients in a VA hospital.

Full-time students attending a South Dakota post-high school institution.

Foreign exchange students at either public or private high schools (hunter safety card required for those under 16 years of age).

Welcome to the sight Tyler! I noticed that you said you could still hunt in SD this year even thou you have graduated and moved out of state. You might want to double check that with the stat of SD. Had a buddy in the same situation last year. He emailed the Game Fish and Parks and they told him all license were null and void once he graduated and moved to another state. Also know another guy that got a SD deer license and wanted to know for sure so he called the warden and he told him the tag was not valid anymore. Might want to check on this to make sure. Hate to see you run into problems. Goodluck.

Humm.. That worries me a bit. Sounds like the exact same situation I am in. I'd better check again with another officer. Wonder if fishing is the same.. After reading the manual closely, it appears I am legal, but I'd better check with an authority to be sure.

Well, I talked with another SD game warden and he explained to me that my 2005 SD combintation license (although purchased legally) is null and void since I took up residency in another state. I'm going to purchase an out of state fishing license and give some more though to my hunting plans. Looks like waterfowl hunting in SD is out of the questions for this year.

Thanks for the heads up. That could have been tragic if I would have lost my privelagies in the great state of South Dakota

Sorry about your plans Tyler, if you would like to hunt Sisseton/Whapeton Sioux tribal land you might be able to go this year in SD yet. I've done it and my only tip is to be careful. The birds are there but the maps and lines are often disputed and one must be very careful to watch your own back because I got the feeling the tribal reps. just want your money. shoot me and email if you want any tips there or are looking for a mn hunt sometime...
