LEECH21 Posted August 31, 2005 Share Posted August 31, 2005 That's an American Pelecinid. It grows to 1 3/4-2" long. They live throughout North America. The females have the long abdomens, males do not. Males are rare. It is a type of wasp, but does not sting. They drink nectar. Hope this helps. jonny_redhorse Posted August 31, 2005 Share Posted August 31, 2005 So that's what that menacing lookin critter with that longtail is !....lol!(nice pic BDR)....I saw one on the ground at work last week and "dared" to pick it up by it's wings (hopeing it wasn't going to sting me)...it didn't of course...lol!...here's a pic of a white-faced hornet that I came upon last week end(while lookin for other creatures) that certainly will sting ya!
