Flywheel removing tips?

Macgyver55

Question

I've got a 40 hp Evinrude. Without going into a long explanation of what happened, suffice to say I let a family member use the boat and now I am rebuilding the powerhead. I'm trying to remove the flywheel. I have the proper puller installed and have a tremendous amount of torque applied on it. It won't pop loose. I've tried tapping on it some and putting a moderate amount of heat to it also, but I don't want to damage it. Anybody out there have any secrets, tricks or tips they have found to work before I get a little more aggressive? Thanks.....

You probably already know this but if your puller is out of alignment at all the fly wheel will bind. Your applying heat to the fly wheel and not the shaft, right?

Get a bar under the fly wheel and lift up on it just enough to get some weight to lift the power head, as your pulling up give the pullers center point a whack. It should pop right off.

The best (and only) way to do it is put your puller on with as much thread of the screw as possible, and hit it with an impact wrench. It will pop right off. And no, you wont damage it by using an impact. I take all mine off this way.

Wow! I brought my good puller home from work and tried that. I put it on and used my 1/2 impact and let her hammer until it wouldn't go any more. Then I put my torque wrench on it to give it a little more. Two hits with the hammer and it POPPED off about 6 inches in the air and dropped right back on. Must have lined up perfect because it was stuck enough I couldn't lift it off without using the puller again. Iv'e used a lot of pullers on lots of different things, but I gotta say this was the tightest thing I ever had to pull. Anyway I got it off so I can start the tear down and get moving on this project.

Thanks guys!! smile.gif
