Also heading out there Sept 10-17. Second time out there. First time shot a 6/7 with ny rifle. This time I'm going to try it with my bow. As far as public land check with the fish and game about where and how much BLM land there is in the area.I don't know how much is out there. We hunted private land. There is alot of elk out there in that area. Good luck!!!

I am heading out also but we hunt the extreme south portion of the state, All public land that we hunt on. This is my 5 season 2 with a bow and we seldom see anyone. I am sure the area near Craig is a little more populated but I would stress bringing a packable tent and bag. If you are not finding elk in teh lower country but you are finding lots of people hike up and spike in. The elk are everywhere in Colorado and if you are not seeing them where you are move up. We found lots of elk last year from 11,500' to 12300' and no other hunters. The elk rut will be in full swing when you are there. We are leaving the 1st of September to the 12th this year. The Muzeloader season falls on the 10 to the 18th I believe so you guys may see some smokepoles also. That is the reason we are going before them cause it can get a little crowded while they are there.

Good luck

AARGH !! You guys are making me green with envy!

I plan on getting out there some year for the archery / muzzeloader season, just have to get a couple of people to get their ' you know what in a group ' but that takes an act of congress!

Last year I was out there for a wedding in the middle of Sept. and I snapped this picture just east of Aspen going up to independence pass, looks like someone had some fun.

If you get something, post it up here, it's pretty nice out there in sept. as compared to oct. when we go.

Hey Guys,

I am heading out on Sept.10. Can't wait. I was out two years ago and shot a 6x7 with my rifle. This time I'm going to try it with my bow.We are hunting about 25 miles noth of craig. We hunt private land. The outfitter is in the ranching for wildlife program. For being in that he has to let the public in for one week-end.He picks the week-end for the public. He starts his season the start of september and runs thru october. Last time I must of seen over 200 elk.Good luck with your hunts. I will post when I get back.

Hey guys,

Just got back from my elk hunt. We shot two for four. One was a 6x6 that scored around 340. My buddy shot it the first morning about 30 minutes into the hunt.I shot a cow the last morning for the meat. We didn't see too many elk.I think thet were up high. The heat didn't help to much. We heard a little bit of bugling, they would not answere much. We still had a great time. Better luck next year. confused.gifconfused.gifconfused.gif

Good report

We had similar weather but no kills. I put an arrow in a quakey small window to shoot through. Called in a nice 5 x 5 to my buddy 12 yards but no shot he was facing and needed to take 2 more steps, Wind switched and he was gone. Still a fun hunt even without a kill

340 that is a huge bull. Was the guy who shot it from Leroy by any chance if so I think I know who it is

Here is my first attempt at pictures on the web.

We hunted thru the DOW youth hunt program. It is my kids first big game hunt of their own and were both successful.

I have lived here in Colorado for 10 years now but am a Minnesota transplant.

Oh one more thing I can't wait for ice fishing to start. cool.gif

Thanks Don! But you better look a little closer. The one with the stocking cap is my 13 year old daughter. I don't want her mad at you she might chase you around on the ice this winter.

But hey now you know what me and my kids look like...come on over and say hi if you see us. cool.gif
