I have a problem with geese at my lake home and had heard that putting swan decoys out frightens the geese. Is this true? If so, where do you get swan decoys? If not, what do you guys recommend to get rid of them. I like geese but not what they leave and do to the yard.

Yes, the swan dekes sometimes scare the honkers 'cause the swans are much bigger than the geese and will steal their food and pick on the geese. {Don't think i'm crazy, i've actually seen this happen.}

I,m dating myself but a long time ago George L. Herter from Herter's of catalog fame recomended a tundra swan decoy as the ultimate goose hunting confidence decoy. I could never find one so I use a white egret decoy instead. Of course, that is for fall use, I have no idea how it would work this time of year.

Swan decoys work great to keep the geese away. Dogs are another great idea. If you use the rope thing I ahve been told that silver works the best as they can see it well. Otherwis use fishing line which they can not see and they will run into and be scared off as well.

I hunt in northwest alaska and we shoot alot of tundra swans and geese. We keep out decoys for both and the geese never shy away from them a bit. Of course they are not the giants you are used to down there, we have the cacklers and whitefronts. They are not affected by the swans a bit.
