Pontoon for fishing

Horned_Swede

Question

Hi fellas,

I have two younglings and am looking to move from a 14 foot Lund to a 18 - 22 foot pontoon so it will be easier for them to move around and fish. I also like to do "serious" fishing on Mille Lacs, Vermillion, etc. Will a pontoon handle Mille Lacs? Any words of wisdom about drifting, trolling motors? Thanks!

PS. Off to Mille Lacs again this afternoon from the metro for another round of 14 inchers :-) ....pretty steady action this week so far.

We use a pontoon on Big Stone, and they plain suck in the wind. Depending on how far you fish on Mille Lacs, I would take into consideration the fact that the wind could have quite an impact on your travel time.

The room is nice to have, I'll admit. I'd hate to have to haul one around from lake to lake, though.

You might want to look at a regular boat with a wider beam. I have an 18' Lund Fisherman and it's fairly wide (96" beam) and quite stable. It's roomy enough for myself, wife, and two kids to fish. If I were looking at a pontoon boat I would probably go with a deck boat as they handle more like a regular V boat.
