Need info on selling my boat

I'm going to be putting my boat up for sale on this site in the very near future, but am wondering what paper work is all involved in making the exchange, assuming I'm able to sell the boat. Also, how are the taxes paid on the boat and who pays the tax?

Any help on what papers would be needed (besides the title)and all that jazz would be greatly appreciated. I know I've seen a post on this subject once before, but can't find it, and I really don't want to browse the 250+ pages in this forum trying to find it.

There is no tax on private party used boats. There is trailer tax which is paid by the buyer at the time he changes the registration. You will also need the boat title. A good thing to have is a purchase agreement typed up and signed by both parties that shows the agreed apon price and what is being sold etc. Not sure what type or value the boat is but there are some other sites that get quite a bit more classified traffic for the money. You'll need the trailer title, boat title is nice too. A bill of sale including any warranty or "as is". A list of repairs and mantanence done on boat, outboard and trailer is a plus. Include the trailer, boat and outboard serial numbers and keep a copy for yourself with the buyers signature and contact info. There are other sites that sell boats but they include other states. Theres not a lot of folks that'll make the comitmant to buy anything that they can't personaly check out for themselves much less drive the long distances to do so.

Selling at Fishing MN makes sence because your market is right here in a state with more registered boat owners in the USA plus we have a very large readership.

Thanks guys so much for the help. That's really what I needed to know. I don't have, per say, a title card specifically for the trailer as when the rig was paid off the bank didn't send one. They did however send a Certificate of Lien Release card for the trailer. I assume this will be sufficient for the transfer of ownership. The certificate includes the year, make, model, Title NR (which I assume to be a title number of sorts), VIN number and security date (date of purchase). Hopefully this is what I need for the trailer.

ST - I assume I would be the one typing up the bill of sale to describe all the "as is" features of the sale including any additional items. I'd also assume if there were any problems or deficiencies, those would be included on the bill of sale too. I've got all the serial numbers and will document that. As for a list of repairs, although there weren't hardly any (except for one minor warranty work item), I think I can get a copy of the service performed on the boat from the dealer that did the work. I'll contact them to see if I can get a printout. I agree that this is a good place to place an ad, as you mention, since there are many members of this forum and many, many people who are not members, yet view the site. Hopefully I can get the boat sold as the family will be growing by one at the end of August (we could use the moola if ya know what I mean).
