Closest To Metro, Big Pines, Primitive?

Ive always wondered where the Big Pine woods start...where a primitive campground can be found. Closest to the Metro. Any Ideas, experiences??

You might try the Sand Dunes State Forest Just North of Big Lake MN and West of Zimmerman. They have some camp sites that are primative. I grew up across the road from the State Forest, and loved it as a kid. Good Luck. Only about 45 minutes from Mpls.
