Lowrance Global Map

Question

Simple question, should I get the 4000 with the 7" screen or save $300 and get the 4800 with a 5 inch screen. Either way I'm not getting color. Thanks. Anyone who has one with a 5 inch screen let me know if is too small, I wouldn't think so but I don't want buyers remorse if I go with the 5 incher.

I think with the new TFT displays comming out, guys who used to complain about color finders will change their minds pretty quickly.

I just bought the 4000M myself. I was in the same boat. Deciding on a color or black and white. I talked to thorne bros and they think the 4000m is the better model. Unless you get the new color ones. I am extremely happy with the 7 inch 4000m. I think you will be to if you go that way.
thanks

I've used the 5, and think the 7 would be better. Reason, easier to see detail at a distance. I know you said you didn't want it, but, I would highly recommend Color over mono. Display is fablous day or night, bright sun or clouds. you might consider the 5"color, maximizing the $$.

my $.02

Leechlake,

I'm not saying the grayscale is bad, Just that with the newer softwares there can be more info and detail on the screen and that's when I see the color as an advantage. If you have many different symbols and item to distinguish, the color helped me. Don't remember the model (My buddy loaned it to me in July - Lowrance color 7") and we uploaded highway data and used the gps on the drive to New Orleans, and then gps and sonar screen fishing in the coastal waters.

I just think that very soon you'll be able to load for example a "lakemaster" type contour map and between the lines, waypoints symbols etc, the greater variety of colors will help seperate the info. Only so many variations of gray. I'm reccommend it most onl what you might be able to do with it next year kind mindset. I have since bought a Magellan Meridian color handheld gps and that is WAY easier to read than my Low. Golabmap100 is. Probably more important on a gps than a straight sonar, but not sure if you are looking at the straight sonar or the dual sonar/gps unit.

Thanks for the replies, I bought a Global Map 5000c last night, color. Cabelas was sold out for the season already so I bought it at my favorite sporting goods store in northern Minnesota on line. They do have the lakemaster maps available now, by the way. You just buy the chip, I was told to wait to buy it though, because the map I want is going to be improved soon, rumor has it. Rumor... not necessarily fact. Thanks again.
