Bowhunter needs a little help please...

Recommended Posts

I know this is a shot in the dark, but here goes:

I am a responsible, ethical bowhunter looking for a place to bowhunt within about an hour of Fargo. I work for the railroad and I am on call 24-7-365 and when I get my call I have 1.5 hours to report to work. The place I currently hunt is going to be under water for a long time and will not be huntable this fall. I would be perfectly willing to obey any rules that will go along with access. Also, if someone wants numbers thinned I am more than happy to take a doe. I realize that my chances here are slim, but thanks in advance to all who reply.

Hey Snowman, Im in the same situation as you right now unless this water goes down a lot. Do you normally hunt around the rivers??? A good try might be some of the smaller rivers around Fargo like Wild Rice, Sheyenne, or Maple rivers.

There are a lot of good spots just south of Fargo around the Wild Rice river. Also Kindred and Leanard are not very far away and there are LOTS of deer there and even trophies!!!!!

Hope that might help a little. Your best bet is to scout a little and you will find them.

Snowman:

If you go approx 10 miles south of Leonard down to the Sheyenne National Grasslands to bowhunt, there are alot of places you can hunt with a very good population of whitetails. You could also hunt the mirror pool area where alot of people hunt with rifles. If you go and do a little scouting in this area you will find some very good places to harvest either a doe or a good chance to harvest a good buck. You might have to do a little walking but the time spent will be well worth the effort.I have hunted this area for the last 15 years and have never had nothing but great hunting. If you have any more questions about this area feel free to ask.

I too would suggest the National Grasslands, get a map/plots guide out and enjoy how much public land there is. I have been hunting the National Grasslands for about 5 years and have had great success... Have also SEEN at least 5 trophy whitetails, my wall has not seen any.

Thank you for your replies. I have hunted (rifle) in the sandhills and grasslands for many years. The problem with that area is that I cannot get reliable cell phone reception there and it is just a little too far away for me to go and still make it to work when I get my call. I appreciate the advice, still looking.

Snowman: Have you checked your cell phones signal lately? I never recieved any signal when I was hunting up there just to the west of the old 4-h camp. This summer when I was up to the ranch in July,my cell hade pretty good signal, must have put up a new tower somewhere.

I just changed my service to another phone and the gal at Verizon told me something I did not know that may be of use and may be the reason you are both getting different coverage out there. She said that about once every month or so, I need to dial *228 on my cell phone and hit option 2 "update phone" and update my phone's information. She said that new towers are constantly being put up and unless you update your phone on a regular basis, your phone will not find them? Just thought I would let you know. That is Verizon anyway... I am sure if you do not have Verizon, your coverage is the same way?
