Deep hooked trailer hooks?

Lunker

Recommended Posts

I didn't start using trailer hooks on spinnerbait or buzzbaits until recently. Was wondering if many of you find that you deep hook more fish when using trailers. I figure that if they are still going for the body of the lure itself, and reach it, the trailer will be down in the throat. I hadn't thought about it much until this happened with a pike I caught tonight and realized this was the first fish I've ever deep hooked using a spinnerbait, since usually they don't get such a lure down to far. Any opinions?

I always use trailer hooks with spinnerbaits and buzzbaits and haven't had troubles with deep hooking many fish. Maybe one or two. Usually what I have found is that the trailer hook will latch onto the outside of the fish's 'face' if they doo have the main hook in their mouth.

They work great when the fish are just coming up to nip at the lure. Can really help a lot of misses turn into hook ups

I keep a small, about 10 inches long, set of bolt cutters in my boat for hard hooked fish, cut the hooks, the fish have a better chance than being beat up to get the hook out. Hooks are cheap, it takes too long for big fish to get big.
