Motor problems

fun1

Question

I just bought a boat and was told that it ran good but the carbs need to be cleaned, well I cleaned the carbs and is still runs like dump. Here is what it does...Start it up (have to choke it) let idle for a minute or 2, put it in gear and take off, the boat planes out then falls on its face (no power) after the boat is cold again it will do it all over again. It is acting like a coil pack to me, but I no nothing about boat motors. It is a evinrude 70hp from the early 80's. I did a compression check and the 3 cylinders were 120-130 with no leak down in a 1/2 hr. Boat experts what do you think? It is going into the shop Sat. wondering what to expect. Any of you work on motors around the New Ulm area that would like some cash?

I would say fuel pump. Carbs could be a problem too, if needle valves are not adjusted correctly, floats might not let enough gas into bowls and motor will starve.

When purchasing any boat that has been sitting for 4 months or more, I always suggest to completely disassemble carburetors and clean them good, definitely a rebuild kit won't hurt, but sometimes just a good "scrub" will do the job.

Also it's mandatory to install new water impeller.

Well then it is a good thing that I am taking it to a shop I don't want to get that into it. I told them to do a complete tune up. Valv I might need some back to back seats in the near future can you help?

I think your starving for gas as well. Start at the tank and be sure its vented. Check the fuel line for loose fittings and check the bulb, it should squeeze up tight. While your at it look at the arrow on the bulb just to make sure the hose isn't on backwards. Check all the connections and hoses inside the cover, everything from the inlet fitting to the fuel pump, filter and then to the carbs. Change the fuel filter. Check the screen on the fuel pump to see that its not plugged. If you still have a problem I'd replace the diaphams on the fuel pump. Next step is to pull the carbs off again and check the float level.

Had same problem with 90 hp omc. Turned out to need a new fuel line , tank to motor. Hose must have been collapsing. Just a thought!!! By the way, best mechanic I had the pleasure of knowing always said " think of the simple things first". jps

got it back today, it was a bad fuel pump along with fuel line and primer bulb. I guess the interior of the guel line collaps starving the motor for fuel in turn wrecking the pump.
