Channel Catfishing Later

I don't have any Bullheads so can I use LARGE sucker minnows? Will that be just as effective? This will be in a LITTLE LAKE, perhaps 50+ acres but there are tons of Channels in there. Also, how should I rig it? Just a BIG hook and a HEAVY sinker?

Web-

For targeting channel catfish, I wouldn't worry too much about having live bait. Live bait is more of a flathead cat tactic. Channels love cutbait. I have caught them on cut sucker, golden shiner, and my favorite- Goldeye.

Nightcrawlers will also catch channels although you may catch other fish also, especially in a river.

Fisher Dave showed me the two fathead minnows on one hook trick. That seams to be effective also. Lip hook both fathead minnows and then rip one of the minnows in half so the head is on the hook, this will add a little scent.

I would go with a 3/0 size circle hook on about a 12-18" leader, a barrel swivel, and then your weight. If there is not much current, you don't really need much weight (1/2-3/4oz would seem fine to me). Its basically a Lindy Rig.

Hanson,

I'll be on a lake so there won't be much, if any current at all laugh.gif but thanks for the tip! I'll get some fatheads later because I don't want to catch little sunnies!

Whats a goldeneye??

Here's a photo I found in a different thread.

Goldeye is a 'rough fish' that is primarily found in rivers. My primary goldeye spot is up north and I just stock the cooler with them when I'm up there. They sort of look like a big shiner minnow. Oh yeah, fun to catch too. Fiesty critters.

Try to mess around with your baits some.. let the fish dictate the size of your bait.. a 1" piece of a fresh cut, meduim sucker can be a very good choice for cats of almost any size. The Fathead trick is my early season trick when the fish are still pretty lethargic and dont want to take the larger offering... sometimes the smaller, scent filled presentation dropped in front of their nose is hard to refuse.. even in cold water.

Right now.. its not cold water. Any bait out there that has some flavor and is set near the fish should produce some action... you dont need a huge bait for channels, but you want to have enough bait on the hook to coax the fish into biting. I have done EXTREMELY well in the summer months on leeches also..

I am a novice to lake fishing for cats.. same specie of fish, different conditions. I definitely wouldnt outrule fishing under a float because the fish may be suspended chasing bait around.

I would highly recommend trying to keep *walleye* size baits out there.. not too big, not too small.. just right.

I've never heard of anyone using this up here yet for cats but this is similar to the fathead minnow deal but I've found it to be pretty effective as well. Back when I was growing up in southern Iowa on the mississippi fishing for giant Channels and Blues below L&D 18 we used to jam anywhere from 4 to 6 fatheads on a hook, then step on them and get them squished up real good. Not so they are too mangled to fall off the hook but enough that their guts and the internal juices start leaking out. We used to slaughter them down there with that, worked good for Flats too especially when we left one or two of the minnows in tact. Spent 18 years down there primarily fishing for cats and the funny thing is I have yet to target them since I've been up here. I got to get my priorities straight.

Last night me, my brother and my wife went and after we left the launch, I put on a daredevil, my favorite crappie colored daredevil. 1st cast, I had a strike. It felt like a bass / small pike because he didn't fight much so I was reeling it in and all of a sudden this hugh muskie jumps out of the water, shakes his head a few times and spit my daredevil out!! I was so mad! I only had my medium / fast action st. croix rod with me and when I set the hook, it didn't hook him well enough. Man, I lost the biggest muskie I've ever seen in real life.. My brother and wife and confirm this too because their jaws just dropped on how big that muskie was! I'm going to go hunt for him everyday! haha

As for the batman, I thought it was going to suck but when I saw it for the 1st time I was impressed. ITs was definitely a good movie. It set the tone for the '89 Batman with keaton.. I actually liked keaton as batman better but this was as good show grin.gif

So how did it go? And I saw the new Batman and thought it was pretty cool.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
