A buddy of mine wanted to ask this question on the site, he installed a 2nd locater in his boat and he put the transducer about 8-12 inches away from his first one and the new one that he istalled will work fine but after awhile it acts like it resets itself going from reading correctly, according to his first one to say 900 plus feet. I told him it might be that it ducers are to close, any thoughts.

You have the auto depth on. Is your gain set to manual? If the gain is set to low the auto depth will have a hard time finding bottom and do exactly what your describing. You could set both to auto and it should work right. In time you should start using the manual setting for optimal performance.

If you can't remedy the problem look to see that the ducer is installed correctly and in a good location. The manual or web site from the sounder's manufacturer gives very detailed instructions on ducer placement.

Hey there Shwangman...

Curious... What kind of depth finders are we talking about? AND... is your buddy using both depth finders at the same time?

If so, and they both use the same freq x-ducer, neither will have the correct depth reading as they both will be unable to lock on the bottom. Only if the two x-ducers are of completely different freqs will this scenerio function. Even then, the close proximity of x-ducers may end up being a problem as well....

The interference is possible. I run two sounders of the same frequency together quite often with zero problems. I've done this numerous times mixing different sounders together with and without the same frequency and never had a problem. In fact never had a problem with any interference up until Vexs became popular.

Just a possible tip. If one of the 'sounder's are on the front of the boat and there is a bow-mount trolling motor, it would not be a bad idea to buy the 'ducer that clamps on the trolling motor. That way there would be enough distance between them and the person up front would have a more accurate picture of what is under the boat. That style 'ducer will be in the $70 and $80 range. Look at what ST said 1st and go from there.

Wow S.T., you must have "the touch"...

In all my years with Hummingbird and Lowrance, I've never been able to get two of the same freq (192khz) transducer to work at the same time. Be the transducers one foot apart, four feet apart or even eighteen to twenty feet apart. Skimmers or pucks. Auto mode, manual mode, same settings or different... Still, I get interference at 192khz.

Maybe I should drop down to 50khz transducers or maybe up to 200khz.... confused.gif

Moose-Hunter: The depth finders are both different and the 2nd one is not reading, he actually had hooked to another boat and ran fine, when it was the only one. I still think as a couple of you guys mention, that the ducers are too close but I guess we will have to try out the ideas you guys have mentioned. Heading up to OtterTail and it would be nice to run two units but, the way it sounds with all the damage up there, the transducers will be the least of our problems. Thanks to all.

Moose-Hunter: To answer your question, they are both Lowrances and the guy runs at the same time. I offered up the deal with mounting a transducer on the trolling motor but, I think when its all said and done, he might just pull it of and give it back to me. I see your from Cologne, have you fished Waconia this summer?

      If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.

      Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...

      Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?

      We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
