I have an older Abu Ambassadeur 5000 reel that is in perfect (like out of the box) condition that I have had sitting in my tackle box since about 1982 or maybe even a few years earlier.
I got it from my dad as a kid and it stayed in a padded case in the box until last year. I just got into fishing last year so this reel has really never been used.
I went in to Gander to match a rod for it and was told that I should find an antigue rod and hang this on the wall given the condition. Well I have decided to use it as it casts great and works great (at least to the novice). It has 'Built by Abu Sweden' stamped on the side.
My question(s) to the group are as follows:
1.) Would you use it: a. is it a good reel for trolling and using for heavy cover bass fishing?; b. Is this something that may be worth some money in a few more years if kept in its current condition?
2.) Anyone know what the gear ratio may be?
3.) I have set it up with a Guide Series Pro Select IM8 Rod (6 ft med heavy) and 30 lb spiderwire stealth. Is this a reasonable setup for trolling for pike and going after bass in heavy cover?
Sorry for the long post but any feedback would be appreciated.
Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe. I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho. Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there. About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway. Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work. You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water. When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
