Root River Camping

Can someone please help me out with different places to camp down on the Root River systems. Forestville State Park is filled up for this weekend, but remember other people referring to other campgrounds down there on this site. Something about a red barn??

Thanks for the help.

You should look at the Explore Minnesota web site. I beleive that the "barn" you're looking for is "The Old Barn Resort", call them at 800) 552-2512. They have a web site which you should be able to figure out if you remove "the" and "old" from the above. You might want to call Forestville State Park and ask if all of the campsites are filled as they have a number of campsites that can't be reserved on the web site.

Marc,

Eagle Cliff campgrounds is a good one that is right on the Root between Whalan and Lanesboro. Do a google search for "eagle cliff campground lanesboro" and you'll get the contact info. I've stayed there with a group of misbehaving guys and we had a great time. The owner, Ivan, is a nice guy and a great fisherman, too.

If you intend on canoeing the Root and doing an overnight, contact the DNR and get a Root River map (free). Their canpsites are clearly designated and marked, many complete with an outdoor facility (sorry no walls) and fire pits.

Otherwise, I'd second Eagle Cliff - had a great time there this spring at the TU Rendezvous.

Thanks for the help on the Root. I am looking forward to getting a canoe on it someday. I hear there are some spotted monsters if you get to the right areas, and in non-designated waters also. I was thinking of trying a trip like in the spring when the water is still cool, and the trout are still active.
