autopilot problems

bmc2b

Question

I have a new 70lb autopilot with transducer and copilot. When I had my boat out, the autopilot would spontaneously switch on and off, the motor would sometimes turn spontaneoulsly, and sometimes only turn right and not left. I always seemed to have power, and be able to turn right. My electrical connections seem solid. Any ideas?

Check your trolling motor connections. That is, the connections between the co-pilot and your main motor or the connections between the foot plate and the motor. In my case, I had a similar problem. Turned out that my copilot connections were off....I think some of the prongs were bent or something and I could not do anything except turn left. So I disconnected the copilot and everything worked fine. I am thinking of getting some conduction grease to fill in the connection prongs on my copilot.
