Smallies on the St. Croix

How do you approach fishing the St. Croix river early in the year??? I know we have about 1 1/2 weeks until opener, but i would like to get some some input from somebody who fishes it early.

I plan on fishing the river Bass opening weekend, and would like to know how people would approach the pre-spawn/spawn mode that the fish will probably be in.

What type of areas do these river smallies spawn in??? This is a big question that i have yet to determine...i have some ideas, but need a bit guidance, or reinforcement.

Any thoughts or ideas would be great!!!!!

Fisher look to islands, back waters and large eddies. If they are setting up for spawning, they should be in areas out of the main current. Temps up on the Miss were 50 this past week., so I would bet the St. Croix is not far from that. I would be pitching spinners and cranks as a search bait and have a tube or a some other plastic handy for targeting hotspots. Hope this helps. Good luck.
