Recommended Posts

I was wondering if their are any lakes in the st.paul area that are good for fishing muskies? i heard owasso was alright but i was wondering if that was the best.

Owasso is good, but not really a numbers lake. So it may not be the best for a first time targetting muskies. If it's your first time, I would highly recommend hitting a lake that's stocked with tigers. These are usually good options for the beginner because they're more aggressive and you're more likely to get bit.

There are a bunch of lakes in the area that would fit this criteria. I would pick up a Twin Cities fishing guide by Sybill Smith. This will show you which lakes have muskies and you'll get a decent quality lake map to go along with it. Another thing you could do is go to the MN DNR's HSOforum and look at their stocking data. Pick a county that you're interested in and go back a few years to see the lakes that they've been stocking with tigers.

The Sybil Smith book is about 12 years old now. So all the lakes listed with muskies may not all still have stocking programs going on. Because tigers don't reproduce, you'll want to pick a lake that's still getting stocked or you'll be wasting your time.

Gervais is only a couple miles east of Owasso and has a ton of small muskies. I have never caught one over 10lbs but have caught multiple fish each time out there. They hit anything. and I usually just use bass set ups.
