Trailer tires

Good Time Ranger

Question

The tires on my boat trailer lasted for many years. They have become weather cracked and need replacement. I went to a great tire dealer and he said that they don't make that size anymore. He said that I could put radial car tires on that are the about 1/2 inch taller and the same width. Does anyone know if that would be a problem? Thanks.

Dan

GTR, It won't be a problem unless the tire rubs on the inside of your fender or the frame. Replace them in pairs so your trailer sits level. The only other time size DOES matter is if they're on a differential axle (hard on differential)or steering(pulling to the side). I would STRONGLY advise, Go with radials! They tow smoother, with less effort and consequently take less power(gas milage) to pull. Phred52

GTR, Ya, ya betch ya! I bought my trailer with the bias plys and as soon as I could wear them out(2yrs) I switched to radials. EVEN pulling the boat around in the garage, I could feel the difference! It took at least 1/3 the effort! Hey guy, Good trailering! May you put on MANY miles! I've gone from "almost" to my cabin to "1/4 Of the way back home" on a tank of gas by going to the radials. There's NOBODY on the face of the earth that'll tell me radials don't make a difference! I have 7 years of proof, going on 8!!! Phred52

I switched my tires from trailer tires to radial two years ago on advice from a family friend that owns a tire shop. They make a world of difference. I would list the biggest advantage as being the smooth ride. I hit some major, unexpected bumps with my trailer this weekend and the boat hardly jumps, the tires take out all most all of the shock to the boat.
