setterguy
For the last three years me and my buddies have been hitting Vermillion the weekend after opener. We have had pretty good luck, and even found a few nice crappie spots. There is less boat traffic, the bars aren't as busy and the weather is one week warmer. However every year I get a little jealous of all the opener talk, and the guys that get the first crack at those eyes. Here is to one more week of anguish, and checking the clock. Good luck to everyone that is heading out this weekend. Please think of me trimming out my basement as you reel in those big fish.
2dalake
i hope we're reeling in big ones. If I don't I may get tired of being out in the boat watching the snow flakes streak by at 33mph.

danfall
I can't resist. For about 6 years in a row I opened at 6 am on opening day and consistently did poorly and caught few fish, the weather was usually under 60 and it almost always rained. I'd even take Friday or Monday off to prepare, scout, prefish sunnies. Every year, I'd always be ticked off when the next Saturday was 72 degrees, and I had it reserved for working on the house, or some other foolish work. Finally, I decided to never fish on opener again. This year I decided to change that habit and hit it again. I worked three long nites setting up a new rig and preparing things like 4 gauge trolling wire, radios, batteries, new boat seats, etc. I only had one rule, it had to be more than 55 degrees if it rained, and/or the water temps had to be 50 degrees, then I'd go no matter what. I softened the rule to a recommendation and let my girlfriend's 12 year old decide the plan; this is liberating by the way. He was pretty down when I gave him my recommendation to not go, but I told him it was his choice, and we were going. On Friday I got a call; he decided to go see the Twins on Friday instead of heading north. As much as I like fishing, I was relieved and even more so when it rained all day Saturday and lake temps hadn't made 48.Saturday's current forecast is for a high of 75 and I'm going fishing Wednesday, Thursday, Friday nites, and Saturday and Sunday. There will be no tears come this Saturday, the fish will be biting, and the weather will be grand. I'm jubilant and had to share. No tears here.
