JKH -- Chequamegon Bay water temps?

Recommended Posts

JKH,

We're thinking of coming up in a week or so for some smallie action, depending on weather and water temps. Any idea on temps out at Kakagon Slough. We're trying to hit a window of warming temps, but still prespawn. The weather does'nt seem to be warming this week, so we may push back a week. Would you say that we may be behind a bit this year compared to previous years, or right on track. How was the runoff this year?

Thanks for the info. It sure helps alot.

I think we are right on track... we had that huge warm up at first and then it cooled off.. but the water temps are in the 50 range now or higher in that area... Had some warm rains here last night and it was warm today... so the temps are probably up.. With the last strom we had, it is probably a bit murky down there in the Kakagon, but will clear up by next week... Run off this year, I would say was normal... Nothing out of the norm, other then we really didnt have much rain since this last batch of storms...

I know, from talking to a few folks that there were smallies up in the cut last week, when it was down right cold... I havent talked to anyone after this weekend, I imagine there were a few boats in there for opener... I am sure, there will be fish there to be caught... But, I will keep ya updated.

Jim,

Thanks for the info! Sounds encouraging. Depending on what my buddy says, and next weeks weather -- I think we'll be up on Mon. or Tues. for a couple days of fishing. I'll let you know for sure and maybe we'll see you on the water. We'll be in a maroon and tan Alumacraft Competitor/w 75 Merc.

Good fishing to you, Jim.

For water temps before this big cold front, a friend of mine was up in the cut smallie fishing, and had temps of 52 degrees, but I think this weather may have pushed it down a bit. Too boot, they caught some nice bronzies that day though. It's been brutal around here... brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Jim,

Thanks for the info! Still hav'nt decided if we'll be up Mon., Tues. or the following week. Wind, as you know, is the biggest factor. If we can get on the water, I think we'll catch fish. If you can believe "Weather Underground", it doesn't look too bad for the coming week, so we will probably come up. Too bad we can't fish it everyday for the next couple months, huh?

Any idea what was working for your friends? We're figuring on hard jerkbaits -- Husky Jerks and Rogue's. But who knows what they'll want. Plastics or spinnerbaits maybe.

Anyway, you learn stuff even by NOT catchin', right. I'll keep you posted.

BTW, we'll be in my buddies grey Alumacraft -- 60hp Johnson -- 2 guys. If you're out there Mon. or Tues, pull up and say Hi.

Jerkbaits were the bait of choice. And that is usually what I stick with for pre-spawn, like you said, huskys and rogues. I think that new x-rap should work pretty well this year too along with the strike king bleeding jerk bait. Another bait that I have had good luck with is, hot n tots. 1/4 ounce size usually in a natural color.

I should be out and about on Monday, I think I will be trolling, but I might do some pike fishing. So I might be over that way. If I do, I will try to see you guys and say hey. Good luck, it should be banging with the warm up starting on Monday.
