well the spark plug effect anything?

CALVINIST

Question

I just bougth a older used 18hp evinrude so two weeks ago I took it out to see how it runs. Well it was nothing what I espected! My previous 9hp and the new 18hp ran the same. I was thinking that the 18hp would be a lot more faster but its not. So I changed the spark plugs. Well the next weekend I took it out again and when the motor started a white cloud of smoke just kept on coming out where the water is suppose to cycle and pee from. Well water is not coming out but the white smoke is! Is it becasue of the new spark plugs I put in? I bougth some JC6 for it. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks.

Were the plugs you put in the same as the ones that were in there?. No water coming out of the pee hole, indicates that the water pump impeller is not working correctly. If it sat for several years without being used the rubber on the impeller deteriorates. Also if the motor was started when it was not being supplied water(either in lake, water tank or with garden hose muffs)the impeller is easily damaged.

well the first time I took it out it ran fine, just that it was a bet slow for a 18hp motor! Then I put new plugs in and that's when I notice that water wasn't coming out but just a lot of smoke. Should I try cleaning the lower unit with a holes?

thanks

Bad impeller buddy - I wouldn't run it again til it's been replaced. My buddy had an 18 we changed it on - it isn't terribly difficult - if you are able to say, change a water pump on a car you have the skills to do it - grab a manual and go for it, or hope a shop can get to it before ice comes smile.gif

Maybe not what your problem is or what you want to hear, but two years ago on opener my 60hp started loosing speed and eventually slowed down to a troll. The waterpump went out and white smoke came out of the water exhaust. I had to replace the water pump impeller. Your spark plug change could just be a crazy coinsidence with the white smoke. I would recommend not running the motor at all without finding out why there is no water being exhausted. You can and will do serious damage to the entire motor if it overheats too bad.

If it's not too late change the impeller in water pump or DO NOT use motor.

I don't want to be a pessimist but lack of power might be motor with no compression due to overheating.

It might be too late.

New plugs not the problem. You have a failure in the cooling system; either a bad impeller in the water pump or a plugged system. Do NOT run the motor again until it has been inspected and repaired. In your case I would strongly urge you to take it to a qualified marine repair shop. If you ran it for very long you very well MAY have done serious or even ternminal damage. Sorry. frown.gif
