Door County River for Salmon questions

Recommended Posts

I have been invited to go on a trip with a group of guys fishing in the Sturgeon Bay area of Lake Michigan. Not really sure if it is the Green Bay side or Lake Michigan side but we would be fishing in the River not the bay or lake. I have fished the lake many times out of Kewanee and south to the power plant. Anyway I need my own lures and Equipment. We used Some older Stout 8.5 to 9" poles with large capacity Penn reels I'm sure they will work fine. But out on the lake we trolled and it sound like the technique is different in the river. Anyone know for tackle what works. We are targeting King or Coho salmon in Early Sept. Thanks for any info that can help me prepare for the difference.

I am not familiar with fishing for stream run salmon in that area. But for a rod/reel, I would go with a longer heavy action spinning rod along with a large capacity reel w/ a very good drag. I would look at a rod from St. Croix as I beleive they have spinning rods specifically for the fishing you are going to be doing. For reels, look at larger abu garcia models. And there is probably specific lure set-ups locals around those parts like to use, but I am sure whatever you are going to use will be for reaction strikes from these fish that are moving to spawn. Check with local bait shops in the area and they should get you set-up. Sorry I am not much help, but I am sure there will be someone else that sees this and will chime in.
