You can get boat, trailer, and outboard motor values for free from the NADA web site. That's the same one that gives you values for cars.

As near as I can determine, boat, motor, and trailer combinaitons frequently sell for more than the average value. But that is an excellent starting point, and an outboard alone should not have a large premium like a fully rigged walley boat might have.

NADA is only a figure for reference, it doesn't reflect actual value. They don't differentiate between freshwater and saltwater. We have the highest resale value on motors, same year motor in saltwater is considered "junk" from many dealers. You also have to consider local market trends, NADA is not a good figure.

I honestly feel we don't have a good reference mesasure.

I agree NADA really doesn't reflect a fair market value on outboards. There really isn't set guideline. You can have the same outboard and a dealer could be asking twice what a private party is asking. You have to take into account the condition and hours an outboard has on it also.

The terms a steal, a good deal, fair price and paid too much will always be around.

You can determine your selling price from other references.

Example if you have a 1978 Mercury 50hp and want $ 1,000 when everybody has it for sale at $ 500 and same hp 1996 sells for $ 1,000, you know you are off line.

Asking what it's worth it can give false reading also, if I'm in the market I will try to give it a low value, if I am selling a similar too I agree to the highest sale.

You can check NADA as a starting point, but you will have to adapt your price to the situation.

I add a margin to mine that is not too much, and I sell them fast, but it's my policy, I like to move things very quickly, not having them on lot forever, but many times I know I am "too cheap" and kinda "spoil" the market for many others.
