Opinions on Pflueger Trion for Musky Fishing

I just came back from Gander Mountain with a new musky set-up, my first official set-up grin.gif. I ended up getting the Guide Series 7'6" medium heavy IM8 rod with a lure weight rating of 1/2 - 3 ounces. I also went with Guide Series GS56 bait casting reel. I'm pretty sure it’s made by Pflueger and called the Trion. Anyway, I walked out thinking I got a pretty good deal, being the rod was $10 off and the reel was $5 off price.

I know a lot of people use Abu Garcia’s but I was just wondering if anybody has had any experience with Pflueger reels. I've heard some good things about them so I thought would give them a try. Is this an appropriate size reel for the rod and lure rating? Should I have gone for the 66?

Now that I got this set-up, I'm super excited for the upcoming season. I'm still searching for my first.

Congrats on your first set-up...sounds like your soon on your way to a very nasty addiction smile.gif

I dont know too much about the Trion 66...but I have friend that bought one last year and it seemed to work just fine for him. I also talked to a couple of people at the Blaine Musky Expo last month that had good things to say.....

As a matter of fact, I was also thinking about picking one up but I also wanted to hear from others that have used one for longer then one season. Good luck!

we have used two of the 56 the last couple of years. good reels. the 66 might be a little better for very serious muskie fishing, but we are happy with ours. the size is a little easier for me to handle. the internal parts are solid ( the gearing looks just like the insides of my black max.abu 5600) sounds like you have a great set up.

Last year I bought and used the Trion 66. Very nice reel. I used it as my topwater reel and she is very solid!!! Very smooth and built like a tank.

Good luck

Brian
