new duck and goose calls

Recommended Posts

My first post ever on this thing. Student at bemidji state, i am able to get out in the woods or on the water almost everyday its heaven on earth. Last fall someone stole a lot of my outdoor gear, including my duck and goose calls. Luckly they were cheaper styles. I was just wondering what the best types you people would consider. Brands, reeds, prices all info would help ive been looking around and havent found a favorite yet. Thanks for an help. Looking at spending around 100 on each.

I've only been duck hunting for a few years now, but from my experience, you don't need to spend that kind of money on calls. I have three duck calls on my lanyard right now, the primos wench (poly), an echo double timber (poly), and a RNT Daisy Cutter (acrylic). The echo double timber is my favorite call and it costs about a $100 less than the Daisy cutter. I also got a Foiles meatgrinder (poly) for Christmas and it's an easy call with great sound. I think it retails for about $65.

Acrylic calls do sound great and have a different sound to them but for a hunting call I don't think I would pay that price again. I would rather have another dozen decoys. grin.gif

For goose calls you have to go with a Tim Grounds call. His calls range from $40-$160 and they are top notch. Get on his site and look at them. He stands behind them and will help you with anything you need as far as calling with them.

Personally I like the acrylic for big water or windy conditions on good size areas. I switch to wood in potholes or smaller bodies or once the birds are getting close. Geese in the field I use mainly acrylic but will switch to poly at times. I also have a Corian short reed that sounds awesome but did not use it until the end of the season. I use a single reed duck and now strictly short-reed for geese. I used a flute for a long time but finally made the switch to a short reed and like the variation I get out of it, tough change for me! To me so much is in the tuning of the call as to what you get out of it along with practice! If ya want to hear some of the different ones let me know.
