Reel Maintenance Reading for DIYers

catchin'whopper

Question

Tried doing a search on this but was wondering if anyone knows a resource, text or video, that is comprehensive and easy to follow on cleaning and lubing up reels (baitcast or spinning). I am bringing in a slew of reels but think it would be a good hobby to do it myself and maybe save some cash. Basically would be nice to see what are some tricks of the trade, best way to go about opening the reel, laying it out, cleaning techniques, etc. All these parts on the reels, i would hate to screw it up and then have to bring it in to be fixed then.

So, any ideas from anyone or does anyone currently have something that they have utilized? Thanks for your help, gotta quell these spring itches somehow...

I have some links to a couple of really good baitcaster cleaning articles from 2 tackle shops in the Southern US. I'm guessing I can't put the links up. If you can get me your email address I can send you the links.

i clean all my own reels. first thing to make sure you have the diagrams for each reel.( these have saved my butt many times) i don't have many hints other than to go slow, carefully notice where each pc is, and be patient! be VERY patient! tools, collect as you go. small reg and phillips screw drivers, pliers, a box end/combination wrench for removing the nuts on the handles of bait casters, and a tweesers( sp) i used to spray the insides of my reels, but didn't like the mess. so now i used Q tips and alcohol(sp) to clean and a light grease on some of the parts and reel ease or something similar for the handles and worms gears.

Thanks, i also saw recently there is a new DVD cleaning video put out by some texas couple who have been cleaning them for eyars and now stand to make a profit off their success... at $35 for the dvd. Yikes, that's a little steep at this point...
