0 scalescratcher
I use a Zercom unit and normally have no issues at least getting a depth reading through the ice without drilling. I carry a small cup to use to pour water on the ice and then position the transducer in the puddle. Ice quality and snow on the ice will sometimes hamper getting a solid reading but it's usually enough to get an idea.
