removing the keel saver

I have a skeeter glass boat, and the keel saver has worn through, how do you remove the old one, to put on a new one?

I'm assuming that it's the plastic/rubber kind. At the shop, we've found that a heat gun, a putty knife, and patience seem to work the best.
